Americans have trouble talking about the Muslim threat because: liberals, they don't believe in a Muslim threat since they are trapped in an insipid sort of pantheism, an ostensibly enlightened belief in goodwill and agreeable outcomes; and conservatives, they're not comfortable criticizing traditional religious doctrine or methodology so they go on about jihadi extremism in simplistic military terms of bogus confrontation without ever really being able to discuss the pertinent issue of all religion being by its nature extreme and how, accordingly, Christianity itself had to be subdued for the West to prosper - they cannot learn the lessons of our own troubled past as far as the intransigent faiths of our enemies goes because they fear losing their own, which, ironically enough, is to embrace the devil they repudiate. Both camps can't go where they need to go to face the daunting reality of things.
